A Musical Masquerade: An Ode to Memories and Melodies

In the tranquil embrace of the North West Arctic, a hauntingly beautiful harmony whispers through the icy breezes, caressing the soul with the tender melodies of George Benson's "Masquerade." It is a musical masterpiece, seamlessly intertwining notes and emotions, etching my beloved mother, Joan (Momma), and brother Herbert's(Skip) poignant memories into every soulful strain.

There is a sacredness to Benson's creation, transcending the auditory experience to become an ethereal symphony where souls communicate, unfettered by earthly confines. The fusion of lyrics and melodies weaves an intricate tapestry of the visible and invisible, echoing the precious laughter and silent tears that defined our familial bond. Our souls danced to Benson's chords, finding solace and expression in the soul-stirring melodies that painted our existence with hues of love, loss, and eternal connection.

Amidst the picturesque landscape of the Arctic, where nature paints its masterpieces, the ethereal strains of "Masquerade" breathe life into the silent portraits of Joan and Herbert, reviving their essence in the dance of notes and silences. Each chord is a delicate brushstroke, illustrating the untold stories, unspoken words, and unexpressed emotions that lingered in the spaces between us, forming the silent symphonies of our shared existence (GEORGE BENSON - THIS MASQUERADE | REACTION, n.d.).

As a witness to the eloquence of "Masquerade," I am transported to the sacred space where the ethereal embraces the tangible. Joan's serene smile and Herbert's hearty laughter echo the lyrical nuances, reviving the soulful dialogues that once danced in the earthly realms. Their physical absence, though poignant, finds its solace in the immortal presence of their spirits, which sing through Benson's masterful melodies ("How George Benson Turned an Early 'No' Into a Career of 'Yes,'" n.d.).

Benson's "Masquerade" is not merely a musical composition but an emotional narrative, a lyrical chronicle that breathes existence into the ineffable. Our shared adoration for this masterpiece illuminates the invisible threads that weave souls together, crafting the intricate tapestry of human connection. Momma and Skip, though residing in the celestial realms, find their voices in the tender notes, the harmonious chords, and the soulful lyrics that define this immortal composition (George Benson – "This Masquerade," n.d.).

I'm deeply connected with This Masquerade, intricately woven by the mesmerizing melody, evocative lyrics, and Benson's iconic vocal scat. The seamless blend of jazz and R&B tune encapsulates a haunting allure, each note resonating with the silent echoes of intimate familial moments. The lyrics, steeped in profound metaphors, reflect the intricate dance of revelations and concealments that characterize human relationships, mirroring the silent yet deep dialogues shared with my mother.

The song, composed by the legendary Leon Russell in 1972 and brilliantly reimagined by George Benson in 1976, originating from the United States, is a masterpiece that transcends temporal confines, echoing the timeless essence of universal human experiences.

As I reminisce the cherished evening when my mother and I discovered our shared admiration for This Masquerade, the lyrics gain profound depth, each word echoing the unuttered expressions of love and connection, the silent dialogues of souls intertwined by unutterable bonds of familial love. In the tender embrace of Benson's soul-stirring notes, unspoken emotions found expression and silent echoes of affection were articulated.

Five years later, destiny's icy grip beckoned, yet This Masquerade's warmth transcended the cold silences. As my brother and I, voices entwined in harmonious echoes of love and loss, serenaded our mother, each note of the melody crafted a bridge of silences transcended, and words unspoken yet profoundly expressed. Till this very day I summons the touch of Momma and Skip in the essence of my vocal tribute captured in This Masquerade.

As I traverse the silent corridors of memory, "Masquerade" is the melodic echo that accompanies every step, illuminating the shadowed pathways with the radiant glow of love and remembrance. In this divine dance of music and emotions, the barriers of time and space dissolve, uniting souls in the eternal embrace of melodious affection. Each note, echoing the sentiments that words often fail to express, becomes the harmonious language that transcends earthly confines, weaving the narrative of a love immortal, a connection unbroken, a bond undefinable.

"Masquerade" emerges as the soul's melody in this enriched dialogue between the past and present. With this harmonious echo, yesterday's fond memories waltz gracefully with today's cherished moments, crafting a symphony of eternal connection. The Arctic's serene silence, punctuated by the eloquent notes of Benson's creation, becomes the sacred space where souls meet, converse, and embrace, painting the silent portraits of existence with vibrant hues of love, loss, and eternal connection.

George Benson's Rendition:
Originally recorded by singer-songwriter Leon Russell, “This Masquerade” comes from George Benson’s 1976 album Breezin’, which was a major critical and commercial success for the guitarist. “So believe me, I never made a big to-do out of it. But it helps me to remember this. I once did a recording with Frank Sinatra, and he called me over. I didn’t even think he knew who I was. He said: “Mr. Benson, your guitar playing, we all know and we love that. But I love your voice too.” When he said that to me, I dismissed all those bad reviews of music, talking about my voice and treating me like a dog. Sinatra said he loved my voice. That’s it!”

  1. Wow! What a piece of music! I don't have many 8 minute songs that stay on repeat, but this one is going to stick with me for a while. Such "haunting melodies" as you said but also a free feeling, careless bass line like that. The bass line is AMAZING. There is so much emotion stuffed into this song. The tempo is so relaxed which juxtaposes the slight desperation of the lyrics incredibly well. George Benson's vocal/dynamic control is phenomenal. The review for this song were fun to read. What an evoking song. I am incredibly impressed with this piece of music. Thank you so much for sharing Dave!!!
